The City of Windhoek conducted site visits to ongoing electrification projects across the capital to assess progress on the rollout of the electricity infrastructure that will benefit over 1,200 households.

The project, which is 80% completed, is expected to be finalised in September.

Councillors and city officials formed part of the visit, which followed the groundbreaking ceremony in the Mix settlement in April this year.

Construction is currently underway at 12 project sites across the city. The projects cover the Tobias Hainyeko, Moses ||Garoeb, Khomasdal and Windhoek Rural constituencies.

491 households in the Tobias Hainyeko constituency, 260 in the Moses ||Garoeb constituency, 280 in the Khomasdal constituency and 267 in Mix Settlement Extension 1 in the Windhoek Rural constituency will be connected to the electricity grid once the project is completed.

At the Mix settlement, 267 households are expected to be supplied with electricity, while at Otjomuise extensions 6 and 7, a total of 209 households are expected to be supplied with electricity.

Preparations for the electrification of the Babylon informal settlement are also at an advanced stage, with street light poles and household meter boxes already put up.

The City of Windhoek's CEO, Moses Matyayi, says the electrification programme is expected to improve safety through reliable public lighting.

"What is going to happen is that we just wanted to update the residents of Windhoek as well as the Namibian nation on the activities that I think the council is busy doing as well as what was commissioned. In Mix settlement itself, we were here in May to actually inaugurate and do a launch of the electrification process. Of course we have seen that this progress up to now has reached about 80% of the project completion. We have other sites, but here we are about to be close. There is just the connection to the Nampower lines that needs to also be completed. In a month or two we will have at least the Mix Settlement energised, and they must be able to have electricity."

He indicated that the site visit demonstrates the city's commitment to monitoring the project implementation and expanding access to essential municipal services for residents.
