Namibia's Women's Rugby Sevens team has received US$50 000, approximately N$800 000, to support preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

The Namibia National Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Association, in partnership with the Namibia Rugby Union, have announced the Olympic Solidarity Team Support Grant for the national women's team.

The funding will support Namibia's Women's Rugby Sevens programme in areas including athlete development, coaching and technical support, training camps and international competition exposure.

The programme is also intended to establish a pathway for the team as it works towards qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

NNOC-CGA CEO Anri Parker said the investment will create opportunities for Namibian female athletes to compete at the international level.

"This US$50 000 investment is about much more than funding a team. It is about creating an opportunity for Namibian women to compete, develop and ultimately challenge for a place on the Olympic stage. Our responsibility as the NNOC-CGA is to ensure that opportunities available through the Olympic Movement are translated into meaningful programmes for our athletes and National Federations."

The Namibia Rugby Union’s board member Herman Rust welcomed the grant, and said it will support the development of women's rugby in the country.

"The US$50 000 Olympic Solidarity Support provides Namibia Rugby with an important opportunity to accelerate the development of our Women's Sevens programme. Our focus will be on creating a structured and sustainable high-performance environment that gives our female players the preparation, competition exposure and technical support required to compete at an increasingly higher international level."

With the support in place, Namibia's Women's Rugby Sevens programme will focus on athlete development, international competition exposure and preparations for the Olympic qualification pathway.
