Namibia is partaking in the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha, Tanzania where parliamentary delegations from around the world are discussing issues affecting governance, peace and development.

The Namibian delegation is led by the Vice Chairperson of the National Council , Emma Muteka and includes National Assembly member Dr Peya Mushelenga , as well as National Council members Ueutjerevi Ngunaihe, Raymond Sezuni and Shaalukeni Moonde.

Ahead of the Assembly, Namibia joined other SADC and African parliaments in meetings to agree on common positions on matters of mutual interest.

During the SADC Geopolitical Group meeting, Namibia presented Dr Mushelenga as its nominee for the Bureau of the IPU Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs. The African Geopolitical Group later approved his nomination. The position was previously held  by the late James Uerikua.

The 153rd IPU Assembly is being held under the theme "Enhancing governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities, for all.”

The Assembly will consider issues ranging from parliamentary diplomacy and mediation to peace and security, artificial intelligence, human rights, critical minerals and climate change.

The Namibian delegation is also expected to deliver the country’s statement during the General Debate.
