Kalenga Primary School launches scholar patrol

Learners of Kalenga Primary School in Grootfontein can now cross the roads with guidance following the launch of patrols courtesy of Trigon Mine. 

The 14-1 road linking Grootfontein, Otjinene, and the Omaheke Region is one of the busiest roads in Grootfontein.

Along that road is Kalenga Primary School, with 1,284 learners.

Although some parents walk their children up to the school entrance, most of the learners cross the road by themselves.

Otjinene Constituency honours late President Hage Geingob as a resolute leader

The leaders and residents of the Otjinene constituency joined the rest of the country in remembrance of the late President Hage Geingob, whom they describe as a leader of note, a people's president, and someone who always stood by his word.

The Chairperson of the Otjinene Village Council, Lesley Kauandara, emphasised that the late President Hage Geingob served his country with dedication and had shown political maturity by singling out the appointment of opposition figures into the country's administration. 

Government funding does not meet all needs

Much has been said about the Namibian government's social grants not being sufficient to cater for the needs of the beneficiaries.

While this is true, the N$1,300 has, however, become the sole source of livelihood for people such as Cleofas Mutjira from Otjinene in the Omaheke Region, who suffers from glaucoma and whose life could have been more difficult had it not been for government social grants.

Standard Bank Namibia commits to gradually move low-income earners to modern houses

Standard Bank Namibia, through its corporate social responsibility programme, has reaffirmed its commitment to gradually move low-income earners from shacks to modern houses.

The bank pledged N$2,6 million towards the Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia project for this year.

Standard Bank Namibia Senior Copywriter Khadijah Mouton says the bank has a significant role to play in ensuring the phasing out of shacks in the informal settlements.

Family from Otjinene in embarks on garden project to create jobs

A family from Otjinene in the Omaheke Region has embarked on a gardening project to create jobs for fellow rural residents.

The Fraser family has invested about N$1.5 million to date in their fruit and vegetable enterprise, overseeing more than 20 hectares of garlic and cabbage fields and employing 12 locals. 

Speaking to nbc News team at Ozonduno Village, Steve Frazer says this is a unique project for the area, as most other farmers plant maize and cowpeas. 

Ovaherero and Ovambanderu communities converged at Ozombu Zovindimb for an annual commemoration

The Ovaherero and Ovambanderu communities converged at Ozombu Zovindimba in Otjinene, Omaheke Region, over the weekend for an annual commemoration that promotes the spirit of unity as well as to share updates on the ongoing genocide discussions.

The Ozombu Zovindimba commemoration emanates from the 1904–1908 war between the German troops and the Ovaherero tribe.

It was at this place that General Lother Von Trotha issued the extermination order to eliminate the Ovaherero and Nama communities on sight.
