Namibia has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating violence against children, ensuring that every child grows up in a safe, protected, and supportive environment.

Speaking at the global meeting of the Pathfinding Global Alliance on Ending Violence Against Children, the Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Emma Kantema, highlighted the country's efforts to strengthen child protection systems and promote child participation in decision-making processes.

Dr. Kantema revealed that national studies have found that violence against children, such as online sexual exploitation and abuse, remains a serious challenge that requires urgent, coordinated action.

"Namibia, therefore, calls for stronger global solidarity, continued investment in child protection systems and greater support for evidence-based interventions that place children at the centre. Together, we must act with agency and purpose so that every child can live free from violence, free from fear and free to reach their potential."

Dr. Kantema added that Namibia has created platforms that allow children to actively contribute to national discussions affecting their lives.

These platforms include the Children's Parliament, which consists of children from all regions, including those from marginalised communities and children with disabilities.

The Parliament gives the children an opportunity to engage with the country's highest decision-making structure.

Kantema also noted that children participate at the local government level through the Junior Town Councils, where they contribute to decisions within their communities.

The Minister further emphasised the country's efforts to address emerging threats in the digital environment through the National Child Online Protection Taskforce.

The taskforce has been conducting awareness campaigns, strengthening reporting mechanisms and facilitating multisectoral training aimed at protecting children online.
